A mix of rain, sunshine, and sudden thunderstorms is expected to shape the weather across the country this week, as the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts changing conditions in different regions between April 7 and April 13, 2026.
In its outlook, the department says rainfall will not be uniform, with different parts of the country experiencing wet conditions at varying times of the day. It notes that “morning rains are likely in the Highlands, North-eastern Kenya, South-eastern lowlands, and the Coast,” while afternoons and nights may bring localized showers and thunderstorms in these areas.
Residents in the Highlands west of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin, including Nandi, Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Uasin-Gishu, should expect light morning rains in some places. Later in the day, showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop in parts of these counties during the afternoon and night hours.
In the north-western counties of Turkana and Samburu, the forecast points to generally sunny conditions during the day, with partly cloudy skies at night. However, northern parts of Turkana may still experience occasional showers in the morning and at night.
For the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, covering Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi, mornings are expected to be cloudy with occasional light rains in some areas. These will give way to sunny intervals, before isolated showers develop in the afternoon and night in a few locations.
North-eastern counties, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, are expected to receive light morning rains followed by scattered showers later in the day. KMD notes that these conditions are more likely during the first half of the forecast period.
In the South-eastern lowlands—Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta, as well as inland parts of Tana River County—daytime conditions will mostly be sunny, with partly cloudy nights. Even so, a few areas may experience morning and evening showers.
The Coast, covering Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the Tana Delta, is expected to record showers at different times of the day and night in a few areas, adding to the mix of wet conditions along the region.
Temperature forecasts show that low-lying areas will remain hot during the day, with highs above 30°C. Lodwar and Garissa are expected to reach 37°C, Mandera 38°C, Wajir 36°C, Voi 34°C, and Lamu 34°C.
At night, cooler conditions are expected in highland and Rift Valley regions. Nyahururu may drop to 6°C, while Kericho and Laikipia are expected to record around 10°C. Eldoret and Narok are likely to see minimum temperatures of about 11°C.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged residents to remain cautious, noting that weather conditions may differ from one area to another. It has advised the public to keep track of updates through its official communication channels as the week progresses.
